What are voltage stabilizers and types of voltage stabilizers?
Everything needs stability so as electric supply and home appliances as well. So, stabilizers are made to serve the purpose. But are you aware of what the stabilizers are, their importance, types of stabilizers, and their working mechanism? Here you will get to know all about stabilizers. Let’s begin with.
What are stabilizers?
Stabilizers work by stabilizing voltage supply to the home appliances that is the reason they are commonly known as voltage stabilizers. Voltage stabilizers are electric appliances that control the power supply to home appliances Stabilizers control the voltage supply and ensures a constant supply of voltage to appliances all the time. Voltage stabilizers protect sensitive and precious appliances from voltage fluctuations that are so common in a country like India. Stabilizers protect appliances from voltage surges or frequent high or low voltage supply.
What is the need for stabilizers?
Stabilizers are needed to protect electric home appliances from voltage fluctuations and their consequences. Fluctuations may be high or low that is high voltage or low voltage and both are harmful to the functioning of appliances. Sudden High voltage supply causes permanent damage to appliances and insulation damage to windings. The low voltage supply is also unfit for electric appliances as it causes malfunctioning of appliances and computational errors that reduce the speed and performance of appliances. Protection of electric appliances from harmful consequences of voltage fluctuations is the reason for the existence of voltage stabilizers.
What is the working mechanism of stabilizers?
A voltage stabilizer is used as a voltage correction device that works by correcting voltage from over and under-voltage conditions.
The overvoltage condition is corrected by buck operation. In buck operation, the transformer deducts secondary output voltage from incoming voltage. When the incoming voltage rises, the circuit switches the relay which ultimately switches deducted supply to the load circuit.
The Under voltage condition is corrected by boost operation. In boost operation, the transformer adds secondary output to the primary supply voltage. When the low voltage condition arises, the circuit switches the relay in a way that transfers added supply to the load.
Various voltage stabilizers work as voltage correction but voltage stabilizers are mainly of three types- manually operated or switchable voltage stabilizer, continuous voltage correction stabilizer, and stabilizer with power electronic control circuit:
- Relay type voltage stabilizers
- Servo controlled voltage stabilizers
- Static Voltage Stabilizers
Let’s understand these types of voltage stabilizers in detail.
- Relay Type Voltage Stabilizers:
Relay type voltage stabilizers work by switching the relays to connect one of the transformer tappings to the load. This type of voltage stabilizer has an electronic circuit and set of relays besides the transformer whereas the circuit consists of an operational amplifier, rectifier circuit, microcontroller unit, and other components. The stabilizer has a reference value mentioned by a built-in reference voltage source. The circuit compares the voltage with this value and switches the corresponding relay to connect the desired tapping to the output in case of a difference in output voltage value and reference value. These stabilizers are popular for low-rating appliances due to their low weight and cost. Along with this, these stabilizers have certain limitations including slow voltage correction and less reliability.
- Servo Controlled Voltage Stabilizers:
Servo-controlled voltage stabilizers are known as servo stabilizers that use servo motor for voltage correction. These stabilizers consist of a servo motor, buck-boost transformer, auto transformer, control circuitry, and motor driver as essential components. In this stabilizer, the electronic control circuit detects voltage fluctuation and in case of error, the circuit operates a motor that moves the arm on the autotransformer. This feed primary of buck-boost transformer in a way that voltage across secondary should be the desired voltage output. The servo stabilizers use a microcontroller or processor so that control circuitry can achieve intelligent control.
- Static Voltage Stabilizers:
A static voltage stabilizer uses a power electronic converter circuit for voltage correction or regulation. These types of voltage stabilizers are more accurate than other types of stabilizers. Static voltage stabilizers consist of an IGBT power converter, buck-boost transformer, and microcontroller, microprocessor, or DSP-based controller.

My 1.5 T AC is fitted with voltas 4kva stabilizer which is not functioning properly ie. if voltage fluctuates then it’s stopped automatically. I think it’s not buck/boost voltage if power fluctuates. AC is on off status due to stabiliser problem. Therefore please confirm how to resolve this issue and how to get repair the stabilizer. What’s the problem with this? Please clarify in detail. Thanks.
